Vascular ultrasound also known as duplex ultrasound or doppler ultrasound, is a non-invasive imaging technique used to evaluate the body’s circulatory system. It allows our physicians to assess the flow of blood through arteries and veins, detecting blockages, narrowing or abnormalities in the blood flow and can be venous, arterial or
dialysis imaging.
Ultrasound Procedures
Vascular Ultrasounds
Key aspects of vascular ultrasounds are that they use high frequency sound waves to create images of your blood vessels. They measure the speed and direction of
the blood flow. The advantages of the vascular ultrasounds is that it is non-invasive and painless and does not involve radiation exposure making it a safe option. It is commonly used to diagnose conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT or a blood clot), peripheral artery disease (PAD narrowing of the arteries), carotid artery disease (narrowing of the carotid arteries that provide your brain’s blood supply) and aneurysms (an abnormal swelling or bulge in the wall of a blood vessel). It can also assess blood
flow to your organs and tissues.
Procedure Details
The procedure involves an application of gel to the skin over the area being examined. The ultrasound transducer is then moved over the area emitting sound
waves that bounce off blood cells and vessels creating images on a screen Dr. Iannicello and Dr. Speirs will interpret the images who will analyze blood flow patterns, blood vessel structure any look for any abnormalities.
